What brush are you using now?
I had regular pet store brushes and combs. But then I bought the Madan ones from Jenny at
toplinepet.com
I can't manage without them now - I actually went through withdrawal the other day when Beamer's groomer took my Madan grooming comb by accident. Just couldn't work with the pet store ones any more. I ended up using the Madan small mustache comb which is small but a heck of a lot better than trying to groom with the pet store comb.
The cornstarch, you have to work it through the mat with your fingers.
