Sorry. I could see my Lucy doing the very same thing. And I would be doing exactly what you are doing ~ holding her in my lap!
I just know how she is; when she's in my lap; she doesn't like my other dog approaching sometimes and I know it's because she's 'guarding' me.
So I'm no help at all! Hopefully, someone else with a better trained dog, will come along.
