I have 2 yorkies, male and female. They both were trained at around 9 months old but reliable at 1 year. My problem was that I got Chloe finally trained and then decided to get my little boy Andy. I was potty training for over a year and I was very frustrated. Anyway, the reason why I'm replying is because you said your husband sleeps during the day so you don't want to keep them in the crate because of barking. Personally, our pups whine and bark when they are in the crate, too. But here's the thing, if they can see either me or my husband while they are in the crate, they are fine. So I bought an extra crate to put in our bedroom so they wont bark at night because they can see us. When we got Andy, he would whine at night and we would tell him firmly "NO!" and he eventually stopped because he knew we were still in the room with him.
