Heart surgery has advanced so much, it's just about miraculous what can be done. Both of my parents had several multiple bypasses and had many years added to their lives as a result.
One thing surgeons don't usually tell you is that it is very common for post-op patients to be depressed and/or angry for some time. It only makes sense -- they've had to face their mortality and that's awfully frightening. My mother recognized it in herself and went for counseling. My dad did not, and he had a really tough time getting back to his positive, wonderful self. I really think counseling should be part of the post-op therapy for heart and cancer patients.
Praying for your dad to have a good recovery, and for your mom to handle the stress of this well. And big hugs to you. |
