With the red scabs appearing, I'd get to the vet pretty quick. When they break skin from scratching - an infection can be very likely. It'd be a good idea to get a skin culture and/or scope a skin scrape as well.

This could be bacterial, fungal, flea allergy, or an enviro allergy (including pollen). Before assuming a diagnosis of allergies, however, fungal/bacterial/parasitic needs to be ruled out.
