I definitely would not withhold food for any amount of time with my dogs, but they are both ~5 lbs. Also, if you find that she starts throwing up yellow, foamy bile, it means she has nothing in her stomach and needs to eat. I have found that diarrhea is often followed by throwing up bile.

My vet also told me to put her on a bland diet for 3 days and reintroduce her normal food back into her diet slowly after the 3 days of the bland diet just like you suggested. She is only 4 lbs so I didn't feel like keeping her off food was a good idea even though it was causing her symptoms.
