I'm sure what you're doing is fine, but when I did the crate training, Sydney remained in her crate with the door closed until it was play, food, water, and potty time. She was on a strict schedule. At 12-weeks, she could hold her bladder all night, so your puppy may surprise you. With using puppy pads, I too placed several in the area for Sydney. Over time, I would remove one pad and then another. If she had an accident, I would put a pad back (her way of saying that I was moving too fast). I bought the book "How to House Train Your Dog in 7 Days." Great book and has made me a believer in strict schedules with a puppy.

I hope this helps and good luck!
