I'm wondering if the size of the carrier makes a difference too? Diva's first trip was a 1,200-mile trek to MI from TX when she was 9 weeks old. She was in her large pink crate that she normally slept in. She did great.

She doesn't eat or drink much while we're on the road (she's taken 7 trips since then and is almost 2), but I think having a larger space that is anchored down helps.
