That is sickening! Is this the story?
On September 1st, a fire alarm went off at a property in West Hills, Long Island (NY). However, when authorities arrived at the residence, they discovered no fire. Instead, they found 115 dogs and other animals suffering from malnutrition, according to the Long Island Press.
Firefighters responded to the alarm at approximately 11 a.m., where they discovered the abused animals, including a pony, three goats, one cat, and dozens of dogs.
Roy Gross, Chief of the Suffolk SPCA, claimed that the ammonia from the urine in the home could have triggered the alarm. In addition to the animals seized from the home, the remains of dogs who had perished there were also evident in the bathtub and kitchen sink.
The owners of the animals, Michael and Marilyn Gladstein, were arrested by SPCA detectives later that day and charged with a count of felony cruelty.
“There is no excuse for this [abuse] and it will not be tolerated,” Gross told the news provider. The 115 dogs who were rescued are recovering speedily and the Gladsteins will likely face other charges for animal cruelty.
The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals states that signs of animal abuse can be found in a pet’s physical appearance or behavior. Those who believe they have witnessed acts of cruelty should immediately report the case to the local authorities.
The 115 dogs, most of which were crossbreeds of Pomeranian, Chihuaha and Yorkshire Terriers, are being distributed to numerous area shelters to be put up for adoption. Suffolk SPCA officials said each dog is undergoing thorough screenings to ensure they find the most suitable homes.
Huntington Town Supervisor Frank Petrone added that town officials are considering waiving traditional adoption fees for the animals.
