I have a very similar problem as my neighbor has about 20 cats and doesn't care for them properly. Due to the cats, we had a flea explosion this past spring. With regular treating of the yard and a lot of bathing and combing, I was able to get it under control.

I don't like topicals as anything in a dog's bloodstream goes through the liver. I don't have any with liver issues but don't want to stress their organs with too many toxins. Besides, topicals do nothing to get rid of fleas in the environment. So long as they are there, your dog will get fleas.
