How is he acting now and was he very active before the mass was discovered? Also do any of the vets think he could survive a surgery? I'm guessing they can't tell if it's an operable condition or not at this point in time?
If you wanted to try to save him, maybe go ahead with the surgery, as it sounds like he may starve to death if the mass is not removed, which is a bit cruel. If on exploratory, it is found that nothing can be done, it may be kinder to let him go then, on the table, just don't bring him out of the anesthesia.
