This is almost funny to me. I had almost forgotten why I gave up my ex-pen with my girl Krystal. As a puppy she starting climbing it and I was so afraid she would get hurt getting out of that pen I gave up using it. So when I put her into the whelping area I had put together with the ex-pen as the enclosure I thought she wouldn't do it again. I shouldn't think. Even though it was only a day or so after giving birth she climbed out of the pen to go use the pee pads in the bathroom. Wouldn't use the one in the pen. I watched her do it several times so I pulled a space she could just walk out of. I didn't want her to get hurt. Right now I have a box blocking part of the openning that she can hop up onto to get out. I'm going to have to think of something else when the puppies start getting around. Thanks for sharing this so I can get some ideas!

My husband made me a board to go across the front of the x-pen so the moms can go in and out of the area where the pups are. I use a plastic tie wrap to attach the foot of the board to the x-pen. Most pups can't climb out until they are about 8 weeks old or older but sometimes some will figure it out sooner depending on their size.
