HGE is so scary! My yorkie boy never had it but rather my 60 pound other furbaby has had it twice - the first one so severe I never thought she'd pull out of it. I never ever want to see that again it was horrifying.
Both times Delilah got it around the same time of year, I was convinced it was something from the yard. I still watch her closely even though I've since moved out of fear of how very fast and severe it was.
Edited to add - I don't think there is any way to prevent it, I was told there isn't a known definitive cause of it. I watch poops, appetite and pink gums closely, as I remember each of those being a bit off, and her gums stark white by the time she was rushed to vet. IV, antibioltics, and added potassium in the IV drip is really what I believe stopped her heart from failing.
