Don't punish for mistakes -- especially when you don't see them happening -- as the puppy won't understand why you're doing it. But DO praise when they do it right. Think of training a puppy as kind of like breaking in a boyfriend -- both respond very well to positive reinforcement. Oh -- and clean up the mistakes as quickly and thoroughly as possible so the puppy doesn't use the smell as a cue to go there again.
Sounds so simple, and has been many times with other dogs. Not so sure it's that easy with a Yorkie though -- will be starting that experience next month. |
