Hmmmm...I'm not sure how deep the gap is between your panels in the gate you have now, but how about having an inexpensive piece of plexiglass cut to fit. You could attach it to the inside of the panels with a low temp glue gun- that way if you didn't like it, you could just use a hair dryer to warm it up and remove it.
