Get well soon Gus
Too many people just don't consider the cost of owning a dog over its lifetime.

This is a sobering breakdown of the cost and a very conservative one, at that.

The Cost of Owning a Dog

My personal experience is that toy breed dogs, especially if they didn't come from a breeder who was very careful to screen for genetic conditions before breeding, are much more expensive than larger dogs. Small dogs are much more prone to injury, digestive upsets, etc.

It is recommended that everyone who buys a puppy should have on hand the equivalent amount of it's purchase price. That money should be put in an account set up for emergency vet bills only and added to monthly.
