I saw on It's Me or the Dog that she uses an ex-pen and lines the WHOLE floor (inside the pen) with pads. Do that for a few days, then take one pad away. Then a few days later, take another pad away, etc. Do this until there is only one pad left. It could take up to 2 weeks for this transition.

If you're going to put him in a crate, I would in no way put a pad in there. That will just teach him to potty in the crate and that is something you don't want. Most dogs won't potty where they sleep, in their den. So if you want to leave him in a crate, you will have to expect him to hold it. I don't really agree with having a dog in a crate for 8 1/2 hours a day, but people do it. Is there no way you can hire a dogsitter? That's what I do, hehe. I go to peoples houses mid-day to give the dogs a potty break and it really seems to help. They get to stretch and go potty until owner gets home.
