My vet is about 20 minutes away during low traffic times, but I'm in a city, so there is an animal emergency clinic near by. My vet isn't open really late or on sundays... so the common practice is everyone has their own vet, but the whole group rotates at emerg, I believe. Or something like that... *knock on wood hard* I've not had to go to emerg.
When we had horses back at my mom's place our nearest vet was 1.5 hours away if you drove over the speed limit. It was a headache, but we just didn't have large animal vets anywhere, and none of those vets would do house calls either (common practice for horse vets). It came down to every barn learning a skill and having massive first aid kits, and the vet was a last resort.
So I guess my conclusion after experiencing a vet so far away. I'm comfortable being a ways away from my vet, I took it upon myself to learn as much animal first-aid as possible. I know how to get a hold of my vet, and I'm comfortable operating over the phone to prepare my baby to transport to the vet if neccessary.
