I use Mr. Wags mesh harnesses, and I don't have that issue...However, I've heard people talk, on hear, about Chattiesmom's silk harnesses, being really good about not matting the furbabies...I'd really like to get buddy belt harnesses, but that'd be almost $200 for all three of mine (w/matching leashes)
