That was exactly how it happened to Brody. He woke up with it one morning, it wasn't there the night before, and since it was a Saturday, and we didn't have a regular vet appointment, it was considered an emergency surgery.
I would just do as your vet advised you, but keep an eye on it because you don't want it to get re-infected because it is an open sore, just keep that area as clean as you can.
