We have the same problem. I think she enjoys her freedom in the backyard, and expects the same freedom when we go somewhere that requires a leash. I am always outside with her when she goes out.

I find it hard to get practice with a leash because of the irregular instances that she actually must wear a leash. I also must be a softie because when she pulls away from me, I'll go in her direction because I'm scared she will choke herself from being stubborn.

She is miserable in harnesses as well. We can't please her. You are DEFINITELY not alone, and if someone can offer advice, I would appreciate it as well.
