I've had mine for five months now and no smell at all...that's because I don't let the pee sit in the tray for more than one day (I check in the evening). When there is something there, I just run the tray, seperator, and grass under hot water in the bath tub. Then I just hang the grass to dry overnight and it's ready for set up in the morning.
Word of caution though...the grass is definitely not for wringing, if you do, pieces of the grass start to easily come off and may start to clog up your drain if you're not careful.
