I have black granite with wood, too. We chose to go with a neutral tan 4x4 tile as the back splash because of the light maple cabinets. I wanted something that wouldn't limit me with my choice of paint colors and something that wasn't too overwhelming because I wanted the counter tops to be the focal point.
