Dogs do get melanoma, both benign and malignant. I *think* (but could be wrong) that the malignant type (cancer) would be in spots where the dogs pigmentation is dark (the rims around the mouth, eyes, nose, etc). In other spots, it might still be melanoma but benign (not cancer or life-threatening).

Let us know what the doc says.
