Problem with even cleaning up after your dog responsibly is that other dogs will catch the scent and need to mark it. And the next dog may not be accompanied by a responsible owner to clean up after it. Also - the ammonia in the urine does burn the grass. If he takes any pride in his lawn, he won't appreciate any "recreational" use of his lawn.

How about trying to be cordial? Smile and say good morning. Tell him he has a nice yard and you won't let your dog mess it up. Maybe he's lonely, or sick, or both. If you give him a little respect, you might be surprised.

Sorry to go on a rant but I spend a lot of time with old people and think it's shameful the way we let them be abused and neglected. There are a few people who are just hopeless, but I've found that the really cranky ones are usually frightened or ill, and a little kindness goes a heck of a long way.
