You just need to take the control back. You decide when to let your dog sniff. I walk almost two miles everyday with my girl and the only time we stop is when I give her the okay to sniff. I will usually let her get a couple of minutes at the beginning, middle , and end of our walk. I have her walk in the road never next to the grass and just keep moving. Since we do this so much Tink has become a great loose leash walker and I actually tie the leash to my belt loop so my hand are free.
