I do want the best for the pups but I just don't know if I can afford Champion. |
How many dogs are you feeding? Two little dogs, right? Acana is really not THAT expensive. Around here, a 5.5lb bag of Acana Prairie Harvest is $13.99 and the Grasslands is $14.99. A 5.5lb bag lasts me, oh, almost two months, I want to say. Feeding 1/2 - 3/4 cup per day. A 15lb bag is like $30, I think, and that would last me probably 3-4 months. I've found other food to be a LOT more pricey. For example, when I was feeding NV Instinct, it was $18 for a 4.4lb bag of it, so I was paying $4 more for 1 pound less than what I'm getting now with the Acana. A few foods in Petsmart I've found are sooo much more expensive, like Blue Buffalo. I'm a 20 year old college student who goes to school and is a dogsitter and other side jobs so I definitely am not rich!

Freeze-dried is going to cost you WAY more. I always find the freeze-dried things to be marked up a lot. I just 2 days ago purchased Stella and Chewy's raw pre-made food but it was the frozen kind and it was $8 for 12 patties (my dog would need 5 patties per day). The freeze dried ones were double that, I think. I can't afford to feed raw every day and I wouldn't want to just because I'm totally lazy, and I forget to thaw it out the night before, etc. lol. So I'm doing it sort of as breakfast some mornings in replacement of a meal, just for a nice 'treat'.
I think I posted this in another thread, but some great cheaper foods are Taste of the Wild (
Taste of the Wild : Dealer Locator) Check their site for dealers located near you. Here, Pet Valu sells it and it's like $10 for a 5-6lb bag. Merrick's Whole Earth Farms is also reallllyy cost efficient, it has grains but it's a really good food. In my local store, Fromm was pretty cheap, $10 for a 4lb bag.
