I read somewhere that dogs can understand a massive amount of words. We have taught Penny many specifics: toy, ball, bone, hungry, bed, ni-nite, bye-bye, walk, bathroom, cookie, treat, work, kitty, etc. etc. Some stuffed animals even have specific names, and she knows which is which. Hungry and thirsty are key words around here. She will respond only if she truly feels one of the words.
She also knows a handful of people by their names beside us, including her brother and our cat.
They truly are intelligent animals! And I think we only help them by teaching them more and more.
