I use to do that with Penni (my first Yorkie) I would just "pet" her with a soft brush while she was in my lap. Just using the brush instead of my hand to stroke her.
I'm sorry I didn't mean to go on and on about the "on the lap" brushing. I read your post and for some reason all I saw was the link to the Grooming forum. It's a great idea to do exactly what you are suggestion~it really does help to desensitize to the touching and handling at the groomers. I use to do that all the time with Pebbles when she was a puppy. She would lay in my lap and I would just touch her all over her body, paws, legs, ears, eyes so that she was use to being touched and handled.

When I first became a member of YT before I even had any of my three I read a lot before my first post~like a sponge. It was on the advice of one of the show breeders that I started to do my grooming the way that I suggested. Geez~I wish I could remember who is was to give her credit for great advice but that was many years ago now.......but she suggested grooming on the coffee table while stacking (I think that is what it is called). It was more for getting show prospects use to being elevated for the ring but she suggested it for grooming as well. When I got Pebbles, she was a beast with grooming because she was already 5 months old and never properly trained. She was even kicked out the Petsmart in the middle of her first grooming and told to never return due to her lack of grooming experience. Just imagine how horrified I was when this happened! So I became determined to have the very best dog at the groomers and worked with her every day to get her past her horrible behaviors. Now she is great for the groomer and pretty much doesn't fuss at anything the groomer does~well except her nails but she plays and runs so much in the yard she hasn't needed a nail trim in forever.
