If you use a human hair dryer, I would recommend always, during the entire process, having the air hit your body first. If your pup is on a table, have one hand in between the pup and the dryer as you are working with the pup's hair. Or, lay the dryer on it's side and hold the dog at a safe distance with the air hitting your hands first as well. That way you can feel how hot the air is that is hitting them. Remember that hot air always feels worse to them than it does to us, so if it is hot to you, it's way too hot for them.
Just don't blow them without having it blow your skin, too at all times, so that you KNOW it isn't too hot for them. And don't even get me started on "cage dryers" ...... (ya, I realize nobody is suggesting using those here).
