I like to keep the coat fairly short, not more than a couple of inches all over. If the coat is to long the puppies can get tangled up in the mommas coat. I do not shave the bellies with a shaver. I use a small pair of scissors and careful trim the belly hair as close as I can. I just feel that the moms and pups would not like that 'prickly' feeling when the closely shaved hair grows out.
