I don't know anything about feeding/heat cycles, but my dad's dog, Lily, was spayed at 6 months old and still humps her teddy bear, lol. Pretty much every night. Jackson was neutered at 6 months as well and he still has this one teddy bear he will hump lol... if the bear comes out, it's like automatic. Otherwise he doesn't hump anything else. But it makes him super tired, I think it's great (lol). I know some people think it's wrong and you should stop it but as long as they're not humping people, or doing it in public.
