I'm glad you are willing to try the positive reinforcement. If he is one to figure things out, he might be able to overcome the mat. Plus, from what you say with him peeing while you're gone, the mat might make him even more anxious.

With the peeing while you're gone, this is a way for him to "relieve" the anxiety. Start by closing him in the laundry room for just a few seconds, and then reenter. When he's quiet, give him a treat. Increase the time you're out of the room gradually.
