Yes, you are right. Like most every other breed, Yorkies originated by crossing other existing breeds. The difference is though, they were being bred for a specific
purpose. There was a collective effort by many many breeders to establish them as a breed, they weren't just thrown together willy nilly to feed a current trend. Strict breeding records were kept, the results examined and compared accross the board. Medical testing was performed to distinguish and help eliminate breed specific genetic issues. A standard was set for the dogs. That is not being done with these 'designer breeds' that are popping up everywhere--the two are not comparable.
(It's funny how many times this argument is brought up as a means to justify breeding mutts.)
