Not only does he need less of a higher quality food, it sounds like your pup is at an age where his growth is naturally slowing down. Slower growth or adult = lower food requirements compared to the amount needed for a growing puppy. A 5 pound growing puppy needs a lot more volume than a 5 pound adult.

When it comes to the high quality foods, I still shake my head that people look only at the price of the bag and think it is more expensive than the cheap crappy brands. When you take into account that the dog doesn't eat (or need) as much, the bag of the high quality food lasts a lot longer, so the price per day is lower than the crap stuff. It's a win-win.
