Oh, poor Tess! We have those huge roaches they call "water bugs" here in NC and I am terrified of them, too. They are as big as mice, but much creepier!
I have found they love the coolness of outdoor mulch around your house, especially if you have a lot of shrubs that keep the mulch damp.
Those things are so fast. They seem to sense when you are going to try to kill them and they disappear!
