I have done the same. Instead of a crate I bought and x-pen the "ProSelect Suite Retreat Pet Pen" from PetEdge.com to be exact.
I put Riley's bedding on one side of it and one of the smaller Purina Second Nature litter boxes with weewee pads in it instead of the litter.
