When I had a house with carpeting, I had it cleaned regularly with Stanley Steamer and it did help.
When I had a house with hardwood - I bought cheap throw rugs and even bought my oriental rugs from like Big Lots (they had some nice ones). That way, I could toss them after a few months if need be.
Now, I'm back to a house with a lot of carpeting and worried myself!
