My dogs have never eaten commercial dog food except when they go stay at my dad's for a weekend. I can tell you, when they come home from his house they are sick for 2 days.
For three years I fed them Nutro, but it was recalled WAY too many times for my taste. I switched to Wellness Small Breed (avoid the seafood kind) and have never looked back. My dogs are very healthy and have very healthy "potty" habits. It may be expensive, but it's worth it to not go to the vet often.
