I do something similar -- I use permanent magic markers to mark inside the ear and a dot on each belly. On one occasion I had two litters born within two weeks of each other - Chizzie had 6 and Chattie had 3. There are enough colors to go around, but the large Sharpie sets are rather pricey. So if you have more pups than colors you can two colors on one pup OR be creative and draw a design on the pups belly - since I am not an artist I kept it simple - square, circle star.

I never put anything around the neck of a young pup - except under constant supervision while showing pups to prospective moms and dads. I feel like it is way too dangerous - pups can get "hung up" and strangle - it only takes a matter of minutes to lose a life.
