I use a little flea comb I picked up at the groomers to get the mats out of Bilbo's coat. The black is kind of thick and never mats, but the gold is very fine and mats very easily. He likes to run around in the country and also gets grass seeds and burrs in his coat. I start at the skin with the flea comb, and between it and my fingers, I just work the mats out. I have never had to cut any of his mats out, although it is a lot of work to get them out.
