I honestly never thought of the possibility of something like that. I suppose this would totally exclude a first time puppy owner too since a vet check won't be possible. I'm a little more cautious of first time owners but have placed puppies with some I particularly liked. How sad.
That said, I can think of a couple of times I made wonderful placements where a vet check would have been just plain cruel in the moment, one following the tragic death of a beloved pet, the other the tragic death of a spouse. These are people who arrived here crying and left talking baby talk to a puppy. I have stayed in touch with them over the years, the pups board with me on occasion, and I can see with my own eyes no expense is spared in caring for these animals. OMG I really need to think about this. If the world is that dangerous I'll have to stop doing this. So sad. |
Yeah, well I should copy the wonderful application I received last year from just such a person! Her beloved yorkie had to be euthanized due to prostrate cancer at the age of 14. During his life he had other medical issues....even had surgery for cataracts. I called this lady and spoke with her for an hour and she was just wonderful.
I was so excited as she wanted a little male yorkie that was hard to place.
Being the unkind person that I am

, I called the vet for a vet check and the ONLY time they had ever seen this dog was when she brought him in to be euthanized. Now surely I thought, there must be a mistake...or maybe there was another vet?? Maybe she took her yorkie to a new vet because hers was closed and he was just so sick she could not wait? I sent her an email asking if she had another vet. What came next? A loooong email about how sorry she was....she had made a mistake. There was no OTHER vet. This dog had never been seen by ANY vet until the day he was euthanized. She begged me to give her another chance.....oh, her letter was quite the tear jerker. I am sure I have it somewhere in my emails...and should copy it for you. Some people may have felt sorry for her...Oh, I felt bad...sort of...but, I can tell you that her second chance would not be with a pup from my home! To this day I have no idea even how old the pup was...if he had cancer...or what. I would hope he was in bad shape that a vet would just euthanize without having any history. She was one of those people whose application looked so good, I thought I could go against my normal way of doing things...although I would NEVER adopt to a person without a vet check....I wasted an hour talking to her. That could have been saved with a vet check which is really the first thing I normally do.
I really should save some of the nonsense I run across just for naive people like you. Your post is dripping of sarcasm....you know what..you really don't have a clue do you? Yes, there ARE people just like what the other poster remarked about. There are actually people who travel around collecting dogs from various sources to feed to their fighting dogs!!! Have you not heard of that????? Wake up I say and smell the coffee!!
