My foster katie had balls of GUNK in there! I was wondering why she kept licking her paws. Well her former owners didn't trim inbetween the toes and she had god knows what in there, black gunky goo stuck in her fur. It was a struggle getting her to flip over and cut them out with blunt nosed scissors. She didn't trust me yet at that point.
now I have heard that nose hair trimmers work great too. If your pup doesn't like to be flipped on their back, try to do it in the "shoe-ing a horse" position if that makes sense. Them standing and take one paw and bend it towards the back and make the paw facing upwards.
