It's best to leave him, but I know it's darn near impossible. Most of us have done it (myself included).

If you do take him, don't let him down on any surface, not even the carts. And if possible, don't allow anyone to pet him without sanitizing their hands first. Someone here posted just recently that they walked in to the vet with their baby and the person behind them just pet their dog- only to find out that person had a dog with Kennel Cough. The puppy got infected and ended up spreading it to her entire kennel.
