Omg Help!!! 5 month old is marking his territory everywhere!!

HELP!!

We have a 5 month old yorkie puppy (born March15th) that was doing great going on the pee pads in our home. The worst accident he had was that his front paws were on the pads, but his back ones would not be and he wouldn't quite hit the pads, but he did always go to them to do his business. Then it seems like overnight, he began peeing everywhere! He is now even going on our couch which he has NEVER done before. I contacted the vet & was told that around this time they begin to "mark their territory" and that he should be neutered. We don't plan on breeding him so that is not a big deal. My quesiton is will that work? Has anyone else had this problem and can you offer me any advice? This is the 1st puppy we have had so this all new to us. My children would be heartbroken if we had to get rid of "Bubba". Can someone please advise?!?
