They say it is better to have opposite sexes, they are more likely to get along. But there are many homes with 2 or more of the same sex. As long as they are spayed/neutered, there usually is not a problem.
I agree with not wanting to leave one alone all day. I think all dogs should have a buddy, even if it's a cat.
