Wow, lots of great info on here...
So Harley's making some progress. he will now let me take my hand off the dish on the floor at supper time for about 10 seconds, and hold his down until I release him... any longer than that and he wiggles his bum and almost jumps up, so it's better to release while he's quiet. I think he's getting it slowly. I'm still undecided on what type of training to pick... why does training have to be so darn expensive.
Oh and to comment on Yorkies being hard to train... I'm on the fence on that one, see when I was training horses, I always picked the toughest ones to train... so I wouldn't know if Harley is average to tough... I know he was super easy to potty train. he's 9 months and at 95% accuracy, and it's only the poos that are off kilter. but as for the rest he is just smart enough to take advantage when I'm not making him work. I think that's what the instructor meant, that these little boogers are SMART, and you can't use physical anything with them, it has to be a mind game. If you can figure them out, I'm sure the training goes really well.
I think I've decided for now I'm going to go with the one on one training. I've always been a firm believer in going my own way when it comes to training, I need to know what I believe in, and personally I don't like clickers, and I just found out the group class I wanted to go to, clicker trains, so i'd rather not hold a clicker and use voice markers in stead. I think Harley will benefit more from me knowing 100% what I want him to do and how to do it... I think once I have a base system that works then I can take him into a class and work... oh and I know a few people mentioned the socialization aspect, we have a yorkie group that meets a few times a month, and we do socialization and training together for free. That's part of the reason why the group doesn't appeal to me for that aspect, why pay when I can get it for free.
