It's not about yorkies, but it's about a dog.
A few houses up form me lives a gorgeous and friendly chocolate lab. I remember when he was just a pup, and I've watched him grow. When I was 10, and he was still a pup, I witnessed his owner kick him. I yelled at her, "That's mean! Please don't hurt him!" and she got in her car, drove after me, and asked where I lived??? Through the years, I noticed that he was outside a lot. That's fine, I thought. He's a large dog. And he has a dog house. And I'm SURE his family still loves him and gives him attention. How could they not? Fast-forward 9 years.... I am older, and I'm realizing the sad truth. That dog has been tied to that same tree, on that same short chain, since he was a puppy. I rarely see anyone interacting with him, unless it's the girl who lives up the street (she visits him sometimes, and brings him food). Half the time I see him sleeping in the dirt, with birds hopping all over him and in his empty water dish. Whenever I walk by, I visit him and give him a treat.... unless I have Yoni with me, in which case I greet him and throw him a treat from afar. And like I mentioned, another girl who lives on my street, along with her mother (who happens to be my mom's friend), are always visiting him and feeding him. I have discussed the situation with them, and apparently they have tried calling to SPCA numerous times. I decided that maybe if they got a call from someone else, they'd take it seriously. Well, they didn't. He basically just said "there's nothing we can do" and hung up. I was heartbroken. What do you mean there's nothing you can do!?!? This dog is attached to a short chain all day, he rarely gets any human interaction, and 99% of the time I walk by and he has NO FOOD. To be honest, I'm not even sure if anyone lives in the house. Once in a while, on very rare occasions, I will see the man who used to live there drive up, feed the dog, and drive away. And I'm not sure if the woman who kicked him lives there anymore. How is this not neglect? How is this not illegal? I wish there were other shelters around, but I live in a very small town and the only shelter that exists is the SPCA. What should I do?
