I used the method described by Chattiesmom and Quicksilver to cure Maximo of pulling. Instead of just changing direction whenever he started pulling, I made him follow me in all kinds of crazy patterns. We don't have sidewalks, so this was easy to do on our quiet street where we usually walk. I moved in crazy-eight patterns, crisscrossing the street, moving forward and backward. Max had no choice but to follow and focus on me.
For your other training, try a new reward and reserve that reward only for this specific type of training. When I introduced fresh chicken, Maximo went nuts. Once you have established the ability to follow commands outside, give the reward only intermittently.
