This happened to us too with a Raccoon in our yard. It came out of nowhere and was walking circles in one area. It looked to be in pain. We called in animal control and they said it was probably rabid.

I turned around and there was this raccoon kinda stumbling around. In less than two minutes the poor thing died, animal control said it most likely was rabid.

Point is these animals can come out of nowhere and be in your yard in an instant. I don't know about your Yorkies but Bentley is interested in anything in HIS yard and wouldn't hesitate to go up to something.
